Thermostats & Timers

Heat-Line strives to provide customers with heating cable systems that not only perform in extreme cold climates, but also operate in an extremely efficient manner. That is why Heat-Line engineers and manufacturers freeze protection solutions with advanced self-regulating heating cable technology which can be safety insulated and thermostatically controlled to increase energy efficiency. While insulation is commonly advised and highly recommended in applications where the protected pipe is to be above ground, thermostats are completely an optional accessory. However, the inclusion of a thermostat and or timer when installing your Heat-Line product is an obvious approach to increasing energy efficiency, especially when combined with insulation.

Thermostats and or timers are a beneficial optional accessory when incorporated with any Heat-Line freeze protection system. Regardless of the overall system length and or operating voltage, a Heat-Line thermostat or timer will reduce energy costs by decreasing overall energy consumption. A thermostat can be added to Heat-Line systems in order to duty cycle the heating cable at a specified temperature, where as a timer can be added to duty cycle the heating cable at specific timed intervals. A thermostat can be added to Heat-Line systems in order to duty cycle the heating cable at a specified temperature. The result of the duty cycling is ON/OFF operation based on ambient pipe temperature. Overall the addition of a thermostat and insulation can increase the operational efficiency of a Heat-Line system by as much as 80%. In installations where a thermostat device is not applicable Heat-Line recommends the use of timers to duty-cycle the heating cable at specified time intervals.

Features

The use of a thermostat and insulation optimizes energy efficiency by allowing the Heat-Line heating cable system to be turned off for extended periods of time resulting in the most energy efficient heating cable system available. Heat-Line is pleased to offer a full-line of thermostats designed for both indoor and outdoor applications.

All Heat-Line systems have a self-regulating / conductive polymer core allowing its heat output to change, increasing with cold, decreasing with warmth microscopically at every point along its length. Since the heating cables vary their heat/energy output with temperature they will not overheat; as a result, thermostats are not a requirement but simply an accessory to increase energy efficiency.  It is important to remember that while self-regulating heating cable technology is very efficient, the heating cable can never operate at zero wattage and thus is a consumer of energy, however small, when powered.

A thermostat or timer can be added to all Heat-Line systems in order to duty cycle the heating cable operation ON/OFF, the result is energy saved and operating costs reduced.

Heat-Line thermostats are set to maintain the pipe at 50°F or 10°C as this setting keeps the heating cable operating in its most efficient state with a proper safety differential of 18°F or 10°C to the freezing point. The safety differential allows for a degree of human error when installing and determining the sensor placement point along the pipe. It is critical to remember during system design and installation that the thermostat duty cycles based on the temperature at one point, its sensor point location. In some cases the proper location may be beyond the standard sensor lead length provided, as a result Heat-Line offers extended sensor lead options upwards of 500 feet (152m) on certain thermostat models.

The sensor point location should be situated along the pipe requiring protection at what is thought to be its coldest point (most likely to freeze), and in most cases this means placed underneath the applied pipe foam insulation. From here the thermostat can properly monitor the environment directly surrounding the pipe and provide the heating cable owner with the greatest return on their investment. Incorrect sensor placement can lead to greater than expected energy consumption, and in some cases poor heating cable performance.

The addition of thermostatic controls or timers reduces the actual amount of time the heating cable is under power. The combination of Heat-Line’s self-regulating freeze protection systems, with insulation and thermostats or timers can optimizes energy efficiency, resulting in the most energy efficient heating cable system available.

For thermostats to work most effectively it is important to place the thermostat sensor on the coldest section of the pipe.  When insulation is applied to the pipe, the thermostat sensor is to be placed on the outside of the pipe between the pipe and insulation. In installations where the thermostat sensor cannot be applied to the coldest section of the pipe the option is available to incorporate a timer device to duty cycle the heating cable device.

Outdoor Water Supply:

In many rural water supply applications, the pipe may exit a building 6 to 7 feet underground and then come above or near the earth surface (grade) 30 feet or more away as rock is encountered. In cases such as this, Heat-Line systems provide the answer as our GF-STAT thermostats have the ability to monitor pipe temperature (not outside temperature) with sensor lead extensions up to 500 feet (152m). If a thermostat is not desired, a Heat-Line system will work safely as they are certified to operate without the use of a thermostat. Although more costly to run without a thermostat, Heat-Line systems can reliably solve freezing issues without the use of a thermostat. See installation instructions for thermostat sensor locations.

Q – Is a thermostat included with the heating cable system?

A – A thermostat is not included as they are not required to operate the heating cable. There are multiple thermostat devices available depending on specific application requirements.

Q – Where is the thermostat sensor lead to be placed?

A – For the thermostat to operate most effectively the sensor must be placed on the coldest section of the pipe. This is generally where the pipe is nearest to the surface or above the ground.

Q – What heating cable length do you start to recommend the use of a thermostat?

A – A thermostat can be applied to any system length depending on the operational requirements. For most residential units, it is recommended lengths 40 feet (12m) and longer be used with a thermostat if possible.

Q – Can one thermostat be used to control multiple heating cable systems?

A – The GF-STAT can be used to operate more than one heating cable system when the heating cables start from a central point and experience a similar operating environment. If considering using one thermostat for multiple heating cable systems, please speak to a Heat-Line technical support staff.

Q – I have a 120 volt GFC model Heat-Line freeze protection system, what thermostat is right for me?

A – Both the HLJ-STAT and GF-STAT operate with 120 volt power supplies, but with a GFC model Heat-Line product a direct plug and play thermostat model such as the HLJ-STAT would be appropriate.

Q – I am going to purchase a 240 volt CS model Heat-Line freeze protection system, what thermostat is right for me?

A – The GF-STAT thermostat control device is designed for 240 volt systems and is manufactured to work in conjunction with Heat-Line cord set (CS model) systems.

Q – Even though the menu controls on the HLJ-STAT are locked, can it be unlocked and changed?

A – Yes. There is an internal jumper that may be moved to make it possible to change settings. Always consult a Heat-Line technician prior to attempting this as changing the setting can harm heating cable performance.

Q – Are you able to make changes to the pre-sets of the GF-STAT thermostat model?

A – No. The GF-STAT thermostat device comes pre-set to regulate at an estimated 50F (10C). Special order thermostats are available that provide you with the adjustability required in the GF-STAT model.

Q – Does the HLJ-STAT also work for 240 volt heaters?

A – No. The HLJ-STAT product is manufactured with 120 volt male and female power cords. It is designed to be plug and play for 120 volt power supplies and heating cable systems only.

Q – How do I select the proper voltage for my Heat-Line system on the GF-STAT thermostat?

A – The GF-STAT thermostat device has an automatic voltage selector internal to the thermostat which selects and outputs the proper voltage when wire to the power supply.

Q – How do I know if the HLJ-STAT thermostat device is supplying power to my Heat-Line heating cable device?

A – The HLJ-STAT thermostat device has a green LED light centered and located below the LCD display that illuminates when power is supplied to the heating cable device.

Q – How do I know if the GF-STAT thermostat device is supplying power to my Heat-Line heating cable system?

A – The GF-STAT thermostat device has three LED status lights which are Green, Yellow and Red. When power is supplied to the thermostat unit from the power supply the Green light will always be solid. When the temperature drops to a point where the heating cable is engaged the Yellow status light will illuminate and remain solid for the heating period.

Q – Can the sensor leads for the HLJ-STAT and GF-STAT be extended, or are longer leads available for purchase?

A – Yes. Heat-Line provides factory direct longer sensor leads for the GF-STAT thermostat device up to 550 feet (168m), and a single option for a 50 foot (15m) sensor lead for the HLJ-STAT thermostat device.

Q - Which controls device is more accurate, a thermostat and or a timer?

A - Thermostats measure exterior pipe temperature underneath the insulation and duty cycle the heating cable based on the heat loss. Unlike thermostats timers do not adjust to the changing environment (increase/ decreases in outdoor temperature). As a result a thermostat device will always be a more reliable source of control; however not all installations allow the installation of a thermostat and the required sensor lead. In these unique installations a timer is a more appropriate source of control.

Q - Is the HLPC-TIMER a direct plug accessory or does it require field wiring by a qualified person?

A - The HLPC-TIMER is designed to be direct hard wired into the circuit which it is intended to control. As a result a qualified person(s) will be required to complete the installation of the timer. Heat-Line always recommends the use of tradespeople or qualified person(s) for installation of Heat-Line products.

Q - Does Heat-Line recommend any other accessories with the HLPC-TIMER and CS model Heat-Line products?

A - Yes. Under the Canadian and National Electrical Code heating cable systems must be on a GFCI protected circuit. As both the CS model Heat-Line products and the HLPC-TIMER do not include an in-line GFI , an additional Heat-Line MilliAmp GFCI device would provide the required code protection.

Q - Is there a specific cycle duration setting and percentage ON time that Heat-Line recommends for the HLPC-TIMER when installing with Heat-Line products?

A - No. Given that each and every Heat-Line heating cable installation presents different variables, it is hard to set a specific time interval or percentage of run cycle for the average installation. Unlike thermostats timers do not adjust to the changing environment (increase/ decreases in outdoor temperature). Heat-Line recommends to start with shorter cycle time intervals combined with high ON time run percentages and adjust the timer as required to achieve the most effective freeze protection and energy efficiency in your specific installation.

Q - Can I use the HLPC-TIMER with other brands of heating cables not manufactured by Heat-Line?

A - No. The HLCP-TIMER is a percentage cycle timer designed to provide repetitive cycle of self-regulating heating cables that do not require high limit protection. It is not designed and or certified as a high limit device to prevent constant wattage or other hardware store heat tapes from over heating.
