Paladin for Roof is an award winning, advanced, self-regulating heating cable system that can be used for efficient and reliable roof and gutter de-icing.  Roof edge ice build-up, eave icing, icicles and ice dams can all be easily eliminated. Paladin for Roof is suitable for use in gutters, downspouts and drainage pipes.  For installation on the roof itself, Paladin for Roof can be used in conjunction with Heat-Line’s EDGE-CUTTER channel flashings or in the conventional serpentine configuration using Heat-Line roof clips. Paladin for Roof can be used in a variety of applications including, cottages, homes, resorts and farms. Snow sensors, thermostats, timers or other approved devices can be added to the system for increased energy efficiency.

Features

Paladin for Roof is supplied job-ready as a plug-in unit with GFCI protection with a 4 ft. (1.2m) power lead and is factory finished to length making installation simple, fast and cost effective. The need for an electrician to provide on-site power and complex terminations is eliminated. Other power supply options are available.

Paladin is an exceptional freeze protection system for roof-de-icing and can be used on many different roof types and applications. Roof edge ice build-up, eave icing, icicles and ice dams can all be easily eliminated. Whether a Paladin is used in the conventional serpentine configuration or in conjunction with EDGE-CUTTER Paladin is the most reliable, energy efficient system on the market. In applications where the Paladin systems are not suitable, installations may be customized using Heat-Line Cut-to-Length heating cables.

Paladin is cCSAus certified to meet and or exceed North America standards. Paladin for Roof carries wet location approvals making it suitable to be installed inside gutters, downspouts and even inside drain pipes.

Determining the length of Paladin for Roof required is very simple when you start with a diagram of your roof and collect the following information:

  • Total length of leading roof edge
  • Roof eave overhang distance
  • Measurement around any dormers if required
  • Number and length/height of any valleys
  • Number and length of any downspouts
  • Number and length of any underground drainage following downspouts
  • Locate all power supplies and note whether 120V and/or 240V is available
  • If using with EDGE-CUTTER flashings layout the installation locations of the EDGE-CUTTER first

Be sure to keep the maximum lengths in mind when determining where to start and finish each heating cable system.

  • 120V systems –maximum length of 120 ft. (37m)
  • 240V systems –maximum length 240 ft. (73m)

Below are tables designed as guidelines to help determine the length of Paladin® systems required.  Once you have collected, the required information from above you can use the diagrams below for direction. 

  • For standard roofs, add 1 foot of heating cable for each foot of gutter.
  • Add 1 foot of heating cable per foot of down-spout. If downspout is in the middle of the run, loop the PALADIN down and back up. Double the length of the downspout for determining the length of PALADIN to install.
  • For valleys, run the heating cable two thirds of the way up and down the valley.

Paladin is covered by a 5 year limited warranty set forth below. A 10 year extended warranty is also available.

Warranty Application Form

During the time periods and subject to the conditions hereinafter set forth. Heat-Line will repair or replace to the original user any portion of your Paladin product which proves defective in materials or workmanship of Heat-Line. Contact Heat-Line or your installer for warranty service. At all times Heat-Line shall have and possess the sole right and option to determine whether to repair or replace defective equipment, parts or components.

Damage due to natural events or conditions beyond the control of Heat-Line are NOT COVERED BY THIS WARRANTY.

STANDARD WARRANTY PERIOD: 60 months from date of purchase or 63 months from date of manufacture, which ever occurs first.

EXTENDED WARRANTY PERIOD: 120 months from date of purchase or 123 months from date of manufacture, which ever occurs first.

ACCESSORIES, COMPONENTS, ELECTRONICS: Not manufactured by Heat-Line, are warranted only to the extent of original manufacturer’s warranty.

LABOUR, COSTS, ETC.: Heat-Line shall in NO EVENT be responsible or liable for the cost of field labour or other charges incurred by any customer in removing and/or reaffixing any Heat-Line product, part or component thereof.

THIS WARRANTY WILL NOT APPLY:

(a) to defects or malfunctions resulting from failure to properly install, operate or maintain the unit in accordance with printed instructions provided,

(b) to failures resulting from abuse, accident or negligence;

(c) to normal maintenance services and

(d) to parts not used in accordance with applicable local codes, ordinance and good trade practices;

(e) if the unit is moved from its original installation location or

(f) if the unit is used for purposes other than for what it was designed and manufactured,

(g) to the integral ground fault device and related electronics.

PRODUCT IMPROVEMENTS: Heat-Line reserves the right to change or improve its products or any component thereof without being obligated to provide such a change or improvement for units sold and/or shipped prior to such change or improvement.

WARRANTY EXCLUSIONS: As to any Heat-Line product after the expiration of the time period of the warranty applicable thereto as set forth above. There will be no warranties including any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose. No warranties or representations at any time made by any representative of Heat-Line, shall vary or expand the provisions hereof.

LIABILITY LIMITATION: In no event shall Heat-Line be liable or responsible for consequential, incidental or special damages resulting from or related in any manner to any Heat-Line product or parts thereof. In the absence of suitable proof of the purchase date, the effective date of this warranty will be based upon the date of manufacture plus 90 days.

Paladin systems are priced in 10 ft. (3m) increments from 10 ft. to 120 ft. (3m – 37m) in 120V and 10 ft. to 240 ft. (3m – 73m) in 240V. Custom lengths can be provided by special request. AVAILABILITY

As a manufacturer of advance freeze protection systems Heat-Line does our very best to provide customers with products in a timely fashion.

Paladin systems are commonly stocked in product lengths ranging from 10 ft. (3m) to 120 ft. (37m) in 120V GFC models.

For product lengths not in stock or for custom orders, lead time can vary depending on time of year, volume and product requested.

Normal production time is 2-3 days however longer times should be expected through the months of September to February.

Even for commonly stocked product lengths we recommend contacting Heat-Line for current availability and specific lead times as inventory can change on a regular basis.

ROOF CLIPS

Roof clips are engineered brackets designed to secure the heating cable to the roof surface. The roof clips provide an easy, strong and secure support for cabling on sloped roofs with shingles or metal roofs with standing seams. The roof clips can be secured with traditional fasteners or appropriate adhesives.

CABLE GUARDS

Cable Guards are designed to provide mechanical protection for the Paladin for roof series heating cable where it may pass over or onto an edge, which may result in injury to the outer jacket of the heating cable. The cable guard simply wraps around the Paladin heating cable for easy, effective protection.

EDGE-CUTTER

EDGE-CUTTER feathered aluminum flat and angled channel flashings are an aesthetically pleasing option to prevent ice build-up, icicles, or ice dams in roofing applications. When used in combination with Heat-Line’s Paladin for Roof heating cable systems they combine to offer the most reliable and energy efficient roof de-icing system on the market.

DOWNSPOUT HANGER

Downspout hangers are designed to effectively suspend the Paladin for Roof series heating cable system in the gutter downspout while providing strain relief and mechanical protection against sharp edges within the downspout entrance. In cases where a dual trace is required within the downspout, two hangers may be required.

GIT-1 GUTTER SENSOR

Offered as an accessory to the PD-Pro or GF-Pro controller the GIT-1 is an automatic gutter sensor which is mounted in the gutter to sense actual environmental conditions, both moisture and temperature. A PD-PRO or GF-PRO controller must be purchased to operate the GIT-1 sensor. The GIT-1 can be used in tandem with the CIT-1 for added control.

CIT-1 SNOW SENSOR

Offered as an accessory to the PD-Pro or GF-Pro controller the CIT-1 is a versatile and cost effective automatic snow sensor. The CIT-1 senses temperature and precipitation as falling or blowing snow in cold temperatures. A PD-PRO or GF-PRO controller must be purchased to operate the CIT-1 sensor. The CIT-1 can be used in tandem with the GIT-1 for added control.

   

LCD-8 CONFIGURABLE SNOW SENSOR

A standalone configurable switch for automatic, cost effective ice and snow melting. Designed as an alternative and cost effective aerial snow sensor for small commercial and residential applications. The LCD-8 senses temperature and precipitation as falling or blowing snow in cold temperatures. A PD-PRO or GF-PRO controller is not required.

   

PD-PRO CONTROLLER (no GFEP)

Automatic snow and ice melting controller for roof, gutters and downspouts in commercial and residential environments. Type NEMA 4X enclosure, can be installed with up to two sensors such as GIT-1 and CIT-1. GFEP not included.

   

GF-PRO CONTROLLER (with GFEP)

Automatic snow and ice melting controller for roof, gutters and downspouts in commercial and residential environments. Type NEMA 4X enclosure with built-in 30mA GFEP. The GF-PRO can be installed with up to two sensors, such as GIT-1 and CIT-1.

MA-10 GFCI/ELCI DEVICE

According to the Canadian and National Electrical Codes all heating cable systems are required to be protected by a GFCI device for safe operation. All GFC model heating cable systems manufactured by Heat-Line are supplied with a 27 milliamp GFCI. In applications where a hard-wired or CS model Paladin for Roof is required, GFCI protection must be supplied and installed by the installing professional. For hard-wired or CS model installations Heat-Line offers the MilliAmp GFCI device, which is an external enclosure complete with a Class A certified GFCI for both 120 volt and 240 volt applications.

Q – Do I need to use EDGE-CUTTER with Paladin?

A – EDGE-CUTTER channel flashings are an optional accessory that can be used with the Paladin for Roof designed to provide an aesthetically pleasing roof de-icing system, eliminating traditional serpentine heating cable configurations. If EDGE-CUTTER is not required; the Paladin for Roof heating cable system can be mounted with Heat-Line roof clips and installed in a traditional serpentine pattern.

Q – Are roof clips included with the Paladin system?

A – No, roof clips are not provided with the Paladin for Roof system. Every roof de-icing project is unique and as a result requires a different number of roof clips. Heat-Line roof clips are purchased separately as an accessory and are sold in a bag of 10. A Heat-Line specialist will be able to help estimate the number of roof clips required for your specific project.

Q - Does Paladin for Roof come with a snow control device?

A - A snow control device is not included with the Paladin for Roof product as they are not required for proper and safe operation; however, a snow control device can be purchased as an additional accessory. Other control devices are also available for roof de-icing applications such as thermostats or timers.

Q - Can I (the homeowner) install Paladin?

A – Heat-Line provides proper and easy to follow installation instructions with all of our products, and offers market leading technical support. As a result, most Heat-Line systems, including Paladin can be installed by homeowners; however, Heat-Line commonly recommends that a qualified tradesperson complete the installation process

Q - What do I do if I have extra Paladin heating cable?

A - If you have extra heater you can loop the excess back up the downspout, back through the gutter or concentrate more heating cable in more problematic sections of the roof. If needed it is safe for the heating cable to overlap, as it is self-regulating and will not overheat or melt at the point it touches.

Q - Does the unit shut off when not required?

A – No. Paladin self-regulating heating cable systems increase heat output with cold but more importantly, decrease heat output with warmth. As a result, Heat-Line brand products are very energy efficient to operate, but do not completely shut off as they can only idle their output to a minimum amount. To completely shut off the system it must be unplugged or installed with a control device. Heat-Line brand systems should be unplugged or shut off when not required (summer months) and tested each year before use.

 

Q - Does a 240 volt system use less power than a 120 volt system?

A – No - Energy efficiency has nothing to do with the designated voltage. We pay for the energy in watts, not in volts. Years ago the termmore efficientwas attached to 240 volt systems because you can put more load or amperage on a 240 volt circuit. Unfortunately, the term more efficient somehow became misinterpreted to meanmore energy efficientwhich is not the case

Q - If the power fails do I have to reset the unit?

A - Heat-Line products including Paladin are designed to turn back on as soon as the power to the unit is supplied. Once re-energized the Paladin system has the ability to increase its output to immediately begin to de-ice any section of the roof that has or was close to freezing during the power outage.

Q - How much power does a Paladin consume?

A- All Heat-Line brand systems including Paladin employ advance self-regulating heating cable technology which operates to deliver energy and heat output to areas of the pipe that are cold and reduces energy and heat output to areas which are warm. The overall amount of energy consumed depends on multiple factors. A roof and gutter application is an extremely harsh environment as the heating cable is constantly exposed to extremely cold ambient air temperatures, which decrease further with wind chill. To reduce your energy consumption to a minimum you can incorporate snow control devices.

Q- Is there a maximum length of Paladin heating cable systems?

A – Yes. The maximum circuit length of Paladin that is allowed on a 120V circuit is 120ft. (37m), and or 240ft. (73m) on a 240V circuit.

Q- What length of Paladin will I need?

A – The length of Paladin heating cable that will be required can change from application to application as it depends on the size of the roof and how extensive the freezing problems. Once you have the required information collected from the ‘HOW TO MEASURE’ tab you can contact Heat-Line directly to speak with a product specialist to assist, please have your diagram and/or lengths available. As a general rule of thumb installations with Heat-Line’s EDGE-CUTTER system requires less Paladin.

Q – Can Paladin be cut to length if too long?

A – No. The Paladin system manufactured by Heat-Line is a pre-assembled factory terminated advanced self-regulating heating cable system that is not designed to be field terminated and or tailored to length. If you have extra heater you can loop the excess back up the downspout, or gutter or concentrate more heating cable in the more problematic sections of the roof.

Q – My Paladin system is too short; can I add a small section onto the end? If not, what can be done?

A – No. The Paladin system manufactured by Heat-Line is a pre-assembled advance self-regulating heating cable system that includes a proprietary end-seal termination and elastomeric heating cable jacket engineered certified for roof and gutter applications. As such the Paladin system cannot be altered or spliced together in the field. If a greater length of the Paladin is required you may purchase a single continuous product of the proper length, and/or relocate a second power source and install an additional Paladin system to complete the additional section requiring freeze protection.

Q – Where do I purchase the Paladin heating cable system?

Q – What is the indication light on the GFCI located in the electrical lead of the GFC Paladin models for?

A – The indication light located on the GFCI device included with all GFC model Paladin systems verifies that power is provided to the GFCI device and that the GFCI is allowing power to pass through to the heating cable device.
