Does Low Voltage Heat Trace Use Less Energy?

A common misconception is that low voltage electrical appliances, such as a heating cables, consume less energy than 120/ 240 volt electrical appliances. Power consumption is measured in watts, not voltage. Whether you are consuming 100W at 12 volts or 100W at 120 volts you are still consuming 100W of energy. In relation to power consumption with Heat-Line brand heating cable systems, the total watts of energy used to prevent freezing depends upon installation variables and climate. All Heat-Line systems are self-regulating meaning they fluctuate their heat (watt) output depending on surrounding temperature. The most important factor about this technology is that pipes can be fully insulated without over-heating concerns; even plastic. Pipe insulation thickness and type, thermostatic controls, system length and type, below grade or above grade installations all have an impact on the total energy cost; not the voltage in which the heating cable operates.

Listen to the September video blog and learn directly from a Heat-Line technical specialist as to why lower voltage does not mean less power consumption.
